Papeete is the capital of French Polynesia, the main transport hub of the islands and the best place to start exploring the archipelago. Located between Bora Bora and Tahiti, Raiatea is the second largest Island in the French Polynesian Archipelago known as the Society Islands. Throughout Tahiti, Raiatea is known as its "Sacred Island" - the center of royalty, religion, and culture of the entire Polynesia. Historians believe that Raiatea was the main stopover point for early Polynesians newly arrived from Hawaii. It has a fascinating history and it is home to Tahiti - Polynesia's most significant, famous, and well preserved religious site - "Taputapuatea Marae".
